What Cut Files can I use?

If you are Team Cricut, you can open SVG files.
If you are Team Silhouette, you can open DXF files with the basic software. When you decide to upgrade your software to Business Edition, you will be able to open SVG files. It is possible to open PNG or JPEG images, but they won’t have cut lines. You’ll need to trace them in Silhouette Studio so they will cut. I will be able to share my amazing tracing skills in another post!
If you use a Brother Scan n Cut, you can import SVG and change them to FCM to cut. I do no know anything about that process because I’m hard core #teamsilhouette.
What is a SVG File?
Scalable Vector Graphic. That is what SVG stands for. I am just geeky enough to know that SVG files are special because they can go different sizes and still have crisp lines. The SVG file tells the machine where to cut. SVG files can be used by a lot of different cutting machines and even Glow Forge uses SVG files.
What should I look for when I buy cut files online?
I like to buy cut files from Etsy, Silhouette Design Store, and So Fontsy. I really like supporting the small businesses on Etsy. Every time someone texts me a picture of a shirt/sign/vinyl decal, I always check Etsy for the cut file first. I have always had amazing luck finding it and it’s a total win because I get to make someone what they want, and support a small business!
Usually, shops will provide an SVG, DXF, PNG, and EPS file. Make sure you look for the files you need for your cutting machine before you buy.
The other thing to look for when you buy a cut file is to check the shop policies to see how you can use the file. Some are for Personal Use only, so you cannot buy it and sell and item with that file. Usually Commercial use licenses allow for making products. ALWAYS check with each shop!
That’s all the main tips that I have for buying cut files online for your Silhouette machine! It’s obvious to me that I also need a post about tracing! Then you can turn any PNG file into a cut file and it is magic!
