I have one big eye soar in my living room! It is my coffee table! We got it for free because someone else didn’t want it. It is solid black and it has been well used! My kids have played with legos, hot wheel cars, and barbies on the top. They have also stood on to pretend that it’s a stage! So the top looked really bad! There is even a ring on it from a bottle of hand sanitizer that got overused by a toddler.

First, I decided to strip the top of the table. It was chipped so many times that I could see it was wood underneath.
I used CitriStrip as a stripper and poured it on the table and brushed it all around. Then I took plastic wrap and covered the whole table top for a few hours. When I came back, it mostly came off really easy with my plastic scraper! There were some spots that didn’t want to come up, so I just kept scraping until it did!
Can you believe someone covered up this pretty wood with black paint?! I’m looking at every person who painted furniture in 2007.
To get the residue off, I washed it with water and dish soap. Then I waited a few hours for it to dry (actually I had to make dinner for my family) and I sanded it. I use an 80 grit sandpaper first, then I sand it with a 120 grit sandpaper and if I feel like it needs more sanding, I’ll also use a 220 grit sandpaper to finish it. Here is what it looked like after sanding.
Then I used a Aged Wood Accelerator on the top. I just love that stuff! It makes the wood just the tone I want! Then I flipped it over to paint the legs. I taped around so that no white paint would get on the top. Then I used a Zinsser Primer on the legs. I put on 2 coats. This stuff is awesome! It holds paint on so well without needing to sand first!
Then I used some white spray paint over the top. My original plan was to use a brush, but I didn’t want the brush marks! The spray paint went on super well in all the carving in the legs. When it was dry, I took the tape off and brought it inside!
I love how it looks, but I’m sad that now I need new carpet and chairs to match the table! It’s all on the list though! Probably by the time everything else is done, I’ll be ready to redo the table.
